In order to improve the living standards of community members, a number of social welfare and development programs have been initiated to foster socio-economic growth and bring about poverty alleviation.
The Social Welfare & Development Department facilitates home ownership both by giving grants and interest-free loans to the deserving and by undertaking development projects to provide affordable housing at highly subsidised rates. The housing scheme has so far provided over 16,694 new homes at heavily subsidised rates for those living in cramped or decrepit conditions. Additionally, more than 160 housing projects have been completed and 9 are currently under construction.
A set of economic assistance programs are also underway that provide timely grants to address the medical, business and regular needs of the less fortunate.
In addition to improving lifestyle, finance and housing conditions, there is an added emphasis on culture and religious aspects through the ‘fostership program’ - an undertaking by community members who volunteer to foster the socio-economic uplift of their less fortunate brethren.
